The Oysterbox

When the Oyster Box opened its doors in Umhlanga in 1947 it quickly became one of South Africa’s most beloved and distinguished hotels. Now lovingly refurbished, the hotel has simply enhanced its colonial charm and impeccable service and retained its lush tropical gardens and prime seaside setting. Guests will enjoy the seamless combination of modern facilities and old world charm.

The hotel is the perfect base to explore everything that KwaZulu-Natal has to offer her visitors, from excellent shopping centres and casino / entertainment complexes, to uShaka Marine World, the Natal Midlands, the provinces historical Battlefields and Rorke’s Drift and Isandlwana and a variety of game reserves and protected areas.

There are 86 luxurious rooms at The Oyster Box and a myriad of facilities including the Clock Library, six dining venues, indulging at the word-class Spa and relaxation at the gorgeous infinity pool overlooking the shimmering Indian Ocean.

The Ocean Terrace with pizza and Tandoori ovens serves the finest seafood and an authentic curry buffet, while the award-winning Grill Room, offers a regular Saturday evening ‘Dine and Dance with the resident band. There’s an impressive wine list in the glass-ceilinged sunken Wine Cellar and traditional High Teas are enjoyed in The Palm Court daily.

The Lighthouse Bar, named after the red and white Umhlanga Lighthouse, which can be clearly seen from the hotel, offers sundowners overlooking the rollers of the Indian Ocean. The Chukka Bar is the perfect spot for casual chats over a cold beer.

Oyster Box Spa

What makes this award-winning spa so special is their focus on creating personalised treatments for each guest, rather than offering a selection of traditional spa treatments. Guests can expect a spa pampering which naturally, culturally and spiritually engages their minds and bodies.

There are six treatment rooms, two which offer dual treatments, four offering sensational showers and two with hydrotherapy baths. One of the treatment rooms was specially designed to assist the physically challenged. All rooms are an oasis of calm which alleviate the stresses and strains of everyday life. Therapeutic massage treatments are based on ancient cleansing rituals.

The Oyster Box Spa is also host to South Africa’s only authentic Turkish Hammam, a sensual bathing retreat which evolved over thousands of years and which was hailed as a place of cleansing and healing for the body and soul. Many of these traditions can still be experienced in many of the natural hot springs in Turkey, Tunisia, Spain and Morocco. Guests are invited to indulge in traditional Middle Eastern treatments at the Hammam.

Additional facilities at the Spa include; a mist showers, tranquillity lounge, grooming lounge, private fitness club, ladies and gents lockers, cold and warm plunge pools and a dining area offering a light spa menu.

The colonial charm of the 86 luxurious rooms, suites and villas has been lovingly preserved. The exquisite tiles, murals, paintings and antique furnishings blend seamlessly in with the natural stone and timber and calming colours reflecting the magnificent ocean and lush tropical vegetation surrounding the hotel.
