We all have dreams of owning our own private tropical paradise. While Azura at Quilalea might not technically be yours, it certainly feels like it is when you visit this exquisite, private Indian Ocean Island.
One of the southernmost islands in the Quarimbas Archipelago (off Mozambique,) Quilalea Island is surrounded by the pristine waters of a marine sanctuary. Cognizant of the fact that the island is home to age-old baobab groves and a stunning array of flora and fauna, Azura at Quilalea’s offering is eco-friendly and encourages their guests to be part of the solution.
Guests have a choice of nine elegant, stylishly decorated and spacious Villas with either a sea view or a location right on the beach. At anytime there is a maximum of 18 guests on the resort which adds to the feeling of peaceful solitude and tranquillity. There are no phones or I-pod docks here, just a fan (or air-conditioning if you need it) and a fridge to keep your favourite beverages cool.
The villas are built from natural coral stone and makuti thatch. What sets this resort apart from others is their focus on their environment. Guests are able to control their own energy use in their villas, while the resort itself runs off solar power, wind generation and eco-friendly rechargeable crystal batteries. Windows are glassless and have shutters made from local reed which can be left open during the day or closed for more privacy at night.
Furnishings are handcrafted, all natural designer ‘beach chic’. En-suite bathrooms are gorgeously appointed and boast views of the stunning island vistas. Daybeds and sun-loungers beckon you to repose on private decks which have uninterrupted views to the beach and the sea beyond.
Privacy is a given here, where villas blend into the indigenous gardens or natural bush some 16m – 70m apart from each other. The four Sunrise Villas have breathtaking views across the turquoise ocean to Quirimba Island and beyond. The Sunset Villas are more exclusively located and guests are spoiled with an extra outdoor bush shower and hammocks for relaxing.
The most luxurious and romantic of all the villas is the cliff-top Villa Quilalea. When staying in this villa, guests will enjoy their own private infinity plunge pool, romantic four-poster bed, feature bathroom and dressing room, outdoor shower and spacious lounging, dining and relaxation areas.
The cliff-top Villa Quilalea offers the most astounding accommodation for a couple in the whole archipelago, with a private plunge pool, romantic 4 poster bed, feature bathroom and dressing room, an outdoor shower, and its own extensive lounging, dining and relaxation areas. Villa Quilalea is a stunningly private location and has ocean access from a cliff top stepladder.
Each villa is serviced by a Mozambican Butler-host who will look after you during your stay. Hiring and training local employees is part of Azura’s commitment to uplifting the surrounding communities. Their Butler-hosts are warm, friendly and welcoming and very committed to going the extra mile to ensure that you have the most sublime visit to the island.
Mealtimes are special at Azura and they pride themselves on making each one a unique experience that will leave lasting memories. Whether the waves are lapping gently over your bare feet while you enjoy the freshest fruits at breakfast or you’re star-gazing over a candle-lit lobster dinner for two on the beach, Azura’s Butler-hosts take pride in creating innovative dining set-ups and taking care of the little touches that make your stay so memorable.
Menus here are created from the freshest local produce available, with a focus on light meals and simple ingredients. In true island style, there is an emphasis on fresh fish and seafood. There is always an appetising selection available and the chef will do his best to accommodate any personal requests. Mangrove Crabs and Crayfish are a particular speciality at this intimate resort.
Lunches may be a picnic if you are out enjoying an activity, or informal dining at the pool deck overlooking the parrot fish below. Enjoy sipping our cocktail of the day in a variety of surprise locations, and nothing beats watching sunset from the headland, while the moon rises behind you, with drinks and snacks in hand.
While families are welcome, Azura respectfully requests that younger children eat supper early or in their villa. The chef has a delicious range of children’s meals which he will plan with you on arrival.
There are four pristine beaches for your enjoyment at Azura Quilalea. If you’re feeling a little more energetic then explore the surrounding waters, enjoy a beach picnic or share a romantic moment with your loved-one on a sunset Dhow cruise.
The Spa on the headland offers Azura’s signature African treatments, or relax and be pampered in your own villa.
